Your first visit starts with a conversation. We’ll talk about what brought you in, your health history, what you’ve already tried and anything else that may be relevant to your care.
I’ll also check your blood pressure and use pulse and tongue diagnosis, which are traditional Chinese medical diagnostic techniques. Then I’ll answer any questions you have about acupuncture or your treatment.
Depending on what we’re treating, you’ll be positioned face up or face down and given privacy to get comfortable on the treatment table.
Before we begin, I usually place one test needle in your leg. If you hate it, we can stop right there, no questions asked. Most people are pleasantly surprised by how little they feel.
You may notice a brief pinch when a needle is inserted, but that should disappear right away. Dull soreness, tingling, warmth or heaviness can be normal treatment sensations. If anything burns, pinches or remains uncomfortable for more than a moment, let me know and I’ll adjust or move the needle.
Once the needles are in, you’ll rest on the table. You’ll have a call button so you can reach me at any time during treatment.
Depending on your needs, your visit may also include manual therapy, cupping, gua sha, infrared heat or electroacupuncture.
Before you leave, we’ll talk about what comes next, how often to return, and any home care that may be helpful.
